GOA-PANAJI: Dr. Mathavaraj from ISRO's U R Rao Satellite Centre has been chosen as the first recipient of the prestigious 'Manohar Parrikar Yuva Scientist Award' by the Goa government. This pioneering award, initiated by the state, is set to honor Dr. Mathavaraj for his outstanding work in designing the powered descent trajectory for the Chandrayaan-3 Mission.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant proudly revealed that Dr. Mathavaraj was selected by a distinguished panel led by Dr. Anil Kakodkar, recognizing his pivotal role in crafting the successful landing trajectory of the Chandrayaan-3 Mission on the moon's South Pole.

Taking to 'X' platform, Dr. Sawant joyfully announced, "The inaugural Manohar Parrikar Yuva Scientist Award has been conferred. Dr. Anil Kakodkar, who helmed the selection committee, handed over the results today. I am delighted to announce that the recipient is the mastermind behind the powered descent trajectory of #Chandrayaan3 Mission, which achieved a triumphant landing on the moon's South Pole."

The distinguished awardee, Dr. Mathavaraj S from ISRO's U R Rao Satellite Centre, emerged victorious from a pool of 106 applicants, with 14 finalists shortlisted for consideration.

Highlighting the significance of this accolade, Dr. Sawant mentioned that the award comprises a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakh along with a commendation, currently the most substantial cash reward in the realm of science and technology.

The grand presentation ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Manohar Parrikar Vigyan Mahotsav at NIO on December 13, 2023, coinciding with the esteemed Dr. Manohar Parrikar's birth anniversary.
