ROME – Italy recorded 112,691 new infections on Thursday, down 6,300 from the previous day and more than 20,000 from two days before.

Weekly totals for Italy's Covid-19 infections reportedly fell during the previous seven days after plateauing for weeks, according to statistics from health monitoring body GIMBE Foundation.

After several weeks of growth, the weekly totals of new infections stood stable at 1.2 million for three weeks in January, according to the foundation, but the latest estimates were over 900,000 for January 26-February 1, a fall of 24.9 percent. The total number of presently positive cases also decreased, though only by 7.9%, according to the foundation.

The number of new cases decreased in practically all regions, ranging from 7% in the central Italian region of Molise to 46.9% in the neighbouring region of Apulia, which is a positive indicator.

The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units is also falling, as per foundation: 1,717 for the week ending January 17 and 1,549 for the week concluding February 1.
