After sweeping 23 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh (AP) and securing 151 seats in the state assembly, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) will hold significant clout with the Centre in the 17th Lok Sabha. The YSRCP chief, who is expected to take oath as AP chief minister on May 30, met PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Sunday (today).

During his meeting with Modi, the Andhra CM-designate is expected to take up the issue of special status for the state with. Sources said Jagan is also likely to discuss “providing outside or issue-based support to the Modi government in the meeting”.

YSRCP decimated Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) by winning 151 seats out 175-seater AP assembly restricting TDP to just 23 seats. The TDP won just 3 Lok Sabha seats in the recently concluded general elections.

The 14th Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly was dissolved on Saturday after Naidu tendered his resignation after the results were announced on Thursday (May 23).

It remains to be seen whether Reddy will be able to successfully secure the Special Category Status for the state, an issue over which the TDP quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in 2018 after the Centre failed to fulfil the demand.

The demand for special status to Andhra arose after the bifurcation of the state in 2014 when Hyderabad, which generated maximum revenue went to the newly-created Telangana.
