Today is Jagjit Singh's birthday, the 'King of Ghazals'. Jagjit Singh was born on 8 February 1941 and he said goodbye to the world on 10 October 2011. Apart from Hindi, Jagjit has also sung songs in many other languages. He was born in a Sikh family in Rajasthan and was earlier named Jagjivan Singh but later changed it to Jagjit Singh. Jagjit studied in Jalandhar. He started his career in 1961 by singing in All India Radio. Jagjit Singh got his early music education from Pandit Chhagan Lal Sharma and Ustad Jamal Khan.

In the year 1965, he came to Mumbai without telling his family and after trying for a long time, Jagjit Singh got a chance to sing in the Hindi cinema. In 1997, when he was looking for work, he met Chitra Dutta while Chitra was married at that time. After that Chitra and Jagjit started liking each other and in December 1969 Chitra divorced her husband and married Jagjit. Once Chitra told about her love story with Jagjit Singh in an interview. During that time she had said, "When I was 22 years old, I first heard the song of Jagjit Singh. I did not like his voice at all. But gradually I became obsessed with his voice."  Jagjit Singh was also the Guru of Chitra and both used to perform together.

Chitra and Jagjit Singh had a son Vivek, but at the age of 20, Vivek died in a road accident. From then on Jagjit started to remain unhappy and gradually he drifted away from the world of music. He did not sing any song after that for about a year. He slowly returned to the world of music and his wife, saddened by the son's death, announced her retirement.  'Padma Bhushan' award was given to Jagjit Singh by the Government of India in the year 2003. In 2011, Jagjit Singh was supposed to perform with Ghulam Ali in the UK but due to brain hemorrhage, he was admitted to hospital in Mumbai on 23 September 2011. He remained in a coma for about 2 weeks. At that time, his condition deteriorated and Jagjit Singh died on 10 October 2011.
