In August last year, the Commission had asked the government to give its statutory support to collect Aadhaar numbers of new applicants and existing voters to ban many entries in the voter list. The Election Commission had said that it would be necessary to amend the Representation of People Act to get Aadhaar numbers of new applicants and existing voters. In August 2015, the Supreme Court had stopped the project of linking the voter list with the Aadhaar number.
