Madurai: A senior district official reported on Monday that 60 people were injured, 20 of them had serious injuries, during a Jallikattu event in this area's Avaniyapuram.

"We had about 60 injuries yesterday, of which 20 were moderately serious and sent to Rajaji Hospital. 40 more people who had minor injuries received first aid. There are no casualties "Aneesh Sekhar, the district collector for Madurai, said. He did, however, claim that every effort had been made to guarantee the security of both players and spectators.
11 of the 20 injured patients who were sent to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai were still receiving care, a revenue department official said.

Despite the tragedy, yesterday's Jallikattu event went on till 4 p.m., the official said. "We expect no accidents. If someone gets injured, we want to make sure they get the finest medical attention possible. So, everything is ready to go. Jallikattu should be conducted without incident, "Earlier, the Madurai Collector had stated.

Jallikattu, also known as "Eru Thazhuvuthal" and "Mancuvirattu," began in full force on Sunday in three villages of Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

The event takes place on Mattu Pongal, which falls during the Pongal celebrations. A competitor in this local bull-taming competition must take the bull by the horns and tame it as it tries to brush him aside.

On Monday and Tuesday, additional Jallikattu activities are scheduled for Palamedu and Alanganallur. In a Jallikattu competition, only 300 bull tamers and 150 spectators are permitted.
