Jammu-Srinagar Highway Blocked Due to Landslides After Heavy Rainfall

JAMMU: Due to intense rainfall in Mehad and Cafeteria Morh of Ramban district, vehicular traffic at Jammu Srinagar National Highway has come to a halt, caused by landslides. Reports confirm that the ongoing heavy rains have prompted the district administration of Ramban in Jammu and Kashmir to issue a closure order for all schools up to class 10 for today. However, teachers are required to be present for their duties.

Speaking on the matter, Mussarat Islam, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Ramban, said, "Considering the heavy rains and the risk of flash floods, all schools up to the secondary level (Class 10) in Ramban district will remain closed today, June 26. Teachers, on the other hand, will carry out their responsibilities."

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the arrival of monsoon in Jammu and Kashmir. A meteorological official from the MeT department mentioned that from June 25 to 28, the region can expect generally cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate thunderstorms occurring in various locations.

In recent news, the weather office has reported the coverage of several Indian states by the Southwest Monsoon. Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, expressed that the monsoon is expected to progress further in the next two days.

"The Southwest monsoon is now active, encompassing the entire state of Maharashtra, including Mumbai. It has also reached Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and parts of Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Jammu. In the following two days, it will continue to advance and cover additional regions," stated Mohapatra. He further added, "Delhi received the highest rainfall of 5 cm, with rain expected to persist for the next 2 days. Mumbai and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rainfall, with a maximum of 18 cm recorded. Central India is currently experiencing an active monsoon."

Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, heavy rainfall has triggered a landslide on the Chandigarh-Manali highway near 7 Mile, leading to severe traffic congestion in the area.
