Ranchi: A big news story is coming out of Jharkhand. On April 19, various student organisations announced plans to implement a statewide bandh, demanding 100 percent reservation for local people in government jobs. Students have taken to the streets of Jharkhand with their demands. Members of the Jharkhand State Students' Union (JSSU) staged a protest by burning tyres on the road in the Morabadi area of Ranchi. They also went to the nearby vegetable market and asked the shopkeepers to close their shops.

Similar scenes were witnessed in other districts as well, but normal life remained unaffected in the morning. Several schools remained closed across the state, while the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) cancelled the scheduled examinations. Officials said around 2,500 security personnel have been deployed in the state capital in view of the bandh call. The student organisations have been protesting since Monday as part of their 72-hour agitation programme, demanding 100 percent reservation for locals in government jobs. Protesters took out a torch procession in Ranchi on Tuesday evening. They tried to lay siege to CM Hemant Soren's residence on Monday but were stopped by the police.

JSSU leader Devendra Mahto said, 'This government had promised 100 percent reservation in government jobs for local people but opened the door for students from outside the state. During this, we have had to call for a bandh. He said that instead of implementing the 'Khatian' (land settlement)-based recruitment scheme of 1932, it brought back an old employment policy under which 60 percent of seats would be reserved for underprivileged students, while 40 percent would be open to all.
