Jharkhand: A sessions court in Ramgarh has sentenced all the eleven convicts in the cow lynching case to life imprisonment on Wednesday.

This is the first instance of a verdict in a case related to cow vigilantism.

The court had convicted them of murdering a man who they suspected was carrying beef on Friday. The list of convicts also includes a local BJP leader. Three of them were also charged for conspiracy by the court which reveals that the attack was planned.

The incident happened in June last year near Bajartand village in Ramgarh district. A man named Alimuddin, who was travelling in his Maruti Omni, popularly known as Maruti van, was stopped by a group of people, self-styled cow vigilantes. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police claimed that they took action quickly after they came to know about the incident and rushed the victim to a hospital.
The day of the incident coincided with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first ever statement on the increasing incidents of cow vigilantism. Earlier on that day, PM Modi had condemned incidents of cow vigilantism saying violence in the name of Gau Bhakti is unacceptable
