On Tuesday, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) sharply criticized the central government in response to a devastating train accident in Jharkhand. The party took aim at both the Centre and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the INDIA bloc had no involvement in the incident. JMM's social media post also called on the Railways Minister to shift focus from social media content to addressing pressing issues in the railways.
In a separate critique, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the central government for a series of train accidents, questioning whether such incidents would ever cease. She expressed frustration on social media, remarking on the frequency of these accidents and the apparent indifference of the authorities. "Another catastrophic rail accident! The Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in Jharkhand’s Chakradharpur division early this morning, resulting in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries," Banerjee posted on X.
Two people were killed and 20 others injured when at least 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in Seraikela-Kharsawan district early on Tuesday. The derailment occurred around 3:45 AM near Barabamboo, approximately 80 kilometers from Jamshedpur, within the Chakradharpur Division of the South Eastern Railway (SER).
According to SER spokesperson Om Prakash Charan, there was also a derailment involving a goods train in the vicinity, but it is not yet clear if the two incidents happened simultaneously. West Singhbhum Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Chaudhary, who is at the scene, confirmed that the Howrah-Mumbai Mail collided with a stationary goods train. Rescue operations are underway, with a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team en route to the location.
The accident site straddles the border between West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts, underscoring ongoing concerns about railway safety in the region.
