WASHINGTON: A top Biden administration official announces "The border is closed," pushes back on Sunday. The decision is taken against mounting critics that it has failed immigration policy, driving an influx of migrants in the biggest crisis to emerge under the new president.
The Havana-born Alejandro Mayorkas stated that "Now is not the time to come. Do not come. The journey is dangerous. We are building safe, orderly, and humane ways to address the needs of vulnerable children." An estimated 15,000 migrant children, teenagers, and adults have already been in federal custody. The problem became impossible to ignore as the United States on pace to see two million undocumented migrants arrive this year. Biden himself promised on Sunday to visit the border. He requests migrants to stay home. Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas said "We have a plan. We are executing our plan and we will succeed. But one thing is also clear, that it takes time," on ABC. He repeatedly blamed Biden's predecessor Trump, who imposed an array of anti-immigration policies.
Earlier after becoming President Biden talked about rolling back some of the harsher policies imposed by Trump. But first, he needed to impose "guardrails" to prevent a huge influx of migrants. According to the reports more than 10,000 abandoned children are now in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services. Also over 5000 others are under the care of the Customs and Border Protection agency. The influx had begun to grow even before Biden came to office in January, propelled partly by deteriorating conditions in parts of Central America.
