Washington, D.C.: U.S. President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, prompting the cancellation of a campaign event in Las Vegas. This comes amid growing calls for him to reconsider his re-election bid due to his age.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Wednesday that the 81-year-old president is experiencing "mild symptoms" and will travel to his home in Delaware to "self-isolate and continue to fully carry out all of his duties."
Jean-Pierre mentioned that Biden plans to spend a long weekend at his Delaware beach house. The duration of his absence from the campaign trail remains uncertain.
Shortly after the announcement, President Biden's motorcade headed to the Las Vegas airport. As he boarded Air Force One, Biden reassured reporters, saying, "Good, I feel good."
Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, reported that Biden exhibited upper respiratory symptoms, including a runny nose and a non-productive cough, along with general malaise. Following the positive test, Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and has taken his first dose, O’Connor noted.
News of Biden’s COVID-19 diagnosis was initially shared by the CEO of Unidos US, a Latin civil rights group in Las Vegas. Biden was scheduled to speak at the group’s convention on Wednesday afternoon to rally Hispanic voters ahead of the upcoming November election.
