A veterinary doctor-turned-inventor from Kerala, John Abraham, has finally received the patent right for discovering bio-diesel from slaughtered chicken waste. The bio-diesel will offer a mileage of over 38 km a litre at around 40 percent of the current price of diesel and lowers pollution by half. After seven-and-a-half years, the Indian Patent Office finally granted the patent on July 7, 2021, to John Abraham, an associate professor at the veterinary college under the Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University.

Abraham invented biodiesel from the oil extracted from the waste of chickens that were slaughtered. He said that he invented this during 2009-12. Abraham completed his research under the guidance of late Professor Ramesh Shravankumar. After research, Abraham set up an experimental plant at Pokode Veterinary College near Kalpetta in Wayanad in 2014 at a cost of Rs 18 lakh.

For this venture,  Abraham has got funding from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Subsequently, Bharat Petroleum’s Kochi-based refinery gave a quality certificate to Abraham’s Bio Diesel in April 2015 and since then one vehicle in the college is running on the same fuel. Abraham and his students are now working on a project to make biodiesel from pig waste. He also said that one liter of bio-diesel can be produced from 100 kg of poultry waste from the butcher houses.
