A month ago, it was reported that one’s account was on Instagram, @naijasinglegirl was disabled by Instagram for a copyright claim on a viral video which was published in 2018. This video was a local video, a 21 seconds clip of a Nollywood actor kissing his bride on his wedding.

Normally, this is a video that one can classify as ‘news’ in Nigeria, a video re-shared several times on social media so why is there a copyright claim? It was learned that this claim was filed by an American company known as Jukin Media.

Yes, Jukin Media operates a business model as distributors of viral videos. What they do is purchase the rights to viral videos from the owners. The owners of these videos can either submit their videos to them, or Jukin Media find these videos on social media, buy the rights or strike a revenue-sharing arrangement with the owners, and then license the clips for rebroadcast to brands, digital companies and news outlets. They use their social media channels to scout for the owners of funny/interesting/newsworthy videos, then buy the rights to these videos

They come for as many social media users they can find who have published these videos and strike their accounts or channels with a copyright claim. To build a business which success lies on the virality of videos, then go after independent users who made these videos viral? Note that the more viral a video gets, the higher the social currency of that video. They find their preys on Youtube, Facebook or Instagram like me. Twitter users are not excluded.

How Jukin Media is Making User-Generated Videos go Viral & Break the Internet? While scrolling through your Facebook newsfeed you must have come across compilation videos showcasing epic fails or awesomeness of people. That’s Jukin Media for you guys. A library of different user-generated content under one brand name. The buck doesn’t stop here the same user-generated videos are being used by leading companies like NBC, FOX, MTV, BBC, ELLEN, CNN to name a few who buy rights of the videos from Jukin and the revenue is being shared between the creator and Jukin Media in a revenue-sharing model.
