Freedom fighter Kamaraj is also called the first 'Kingmaker' of independent India. He was a leader who left the post of Chief Minister to strengthen the organization.
K. Kamaraj was born in Nadar caste on 15 July 1903 in Virudhunagar, Madurai (Tamil Nadu). He became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and the President of the 'Congress Party' and Kamaraj, who started his political career from a lower level, was in the limelight due to the 'Kamaraj Plan' for reforming the 'Congress Organization' in the sixties. Kamaraj joined the Congress at the age of 16, influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's ideas. He also played a vital role in the Indian independence movement. Due to this, he also spent time in jail many times.
Kamaraj also played his part in the 1920 Satyagraha led by George Joseph against the exclusion of Harijans from temples. Under his leadership, the Mid-Day Meal Scheme started for the first time in independent India and in addition to this, a free uniform scheme was also introduced in Madras schools.
He believed that children coming from poor sections would be able to eat food. Apart from this, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru also used to praise him. Nehru once said that 'Madras is the best-administered state in India and Kamaraj is behind it'. Kamaraj did a good job in terms of irrigation in the fields and electricity in the villages of Tamil Nadu that even Nehru himself started liking him. On October 2, 1975, he died of a heart attack on Gandhi Jayanti.
