Kolkata: BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya on Sunday rejected the opposition's claim that if the BJP came to power in Bengal, it would implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which would take away the rights of people's citizenship. The Vijayvargiya has insisted that there is no such scheme.
However, he must have said that the party intends to enforce the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and grant citizenship to refugees who have fled from religious persecution in the neighboring country to India. "We are excited about the implementation of the CAA after the elections, as we have promised in our election manifesto. This is an important issue for us because we want to grant Indian citizenship to refugees who are victims of persecution. If we win the election, we have no plans to operate the NRC process.''
According to state BJP sources, the new citizenship law will benefit more than 1.5 crore people in India, out of which more than 72 lakh are in West Bengal. Accusing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of "spreading misleading information against the Saffron Party," Vijayvargiya wondered why the ruling party in the state is opposing the CAA which can benefit many people.
