BANGALORE: In a significant move aimed at prioritizing local employment, the Karnataka state cabinet has approved several key bills, prominently featuring a proposal to enforce 100% job reservation for Kannadigas in Category C and D positions across all private industries operating within the state.

The new legislation, titled the State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024, mandates that 50% of management roles and 75% of non-management positions in the private sector must be reserved for local residents. Additionally, there is contemplation over extending 100% reservation to "C&D" grade government jobs.

Chief Minister X underscored the government's commitment to safeguarding job opportunities for Kannadigas, stating, "It is our government's priority to ensure that Kannadigas are not deprived of employment opportunities in their homeland. We are pro-Kannada and focused on the welfare of our people."

The bill, drafted by the Labour Department, addresses concerns that jobs in Karnataka are being filled by individuals from northern states. It stipulates that industries receiving state infrastructure support, such as land and water, must prioritize local candidates for employment, a measure aimed at balancing regional job distribution.

Previously, the Sarojini Mahishi Committee's recommendations had proposed substantial job reservations for Kannadigas in various industrial sectors based on job categories. However, concrete policy implementation had been lacking until now.

Furthermore, the cabinet also approved bills like the Karnataka Goods and Services (Amendment) Bill and the Karnataka Irrigation (Amendment) Bill, 2024, indicating a broad legislative agenda to address diverse sectors of the state's governance and economy.

The approval of these bills marks a significant step towards ensuring equitable job opportunities for Kannadigas, reinforcing the state's commitment to local employment and socio-economic development. The bills are expected to be presented and ratified in the current legislative session, reflecting a proactive stance by the Karnataka government on employment reforms.
