New Delhi: The Central government has cleared a 100% grant of more than Rs 26 crore to set up a number of floating jetties on rivers in Karnakata, Tamil Nadu for boosting tourism in the state.

Eight floating jetty projects have received in-principle clearance from the ports, shipping, and waterways ministry, with four of them in each of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

"Our Hon'ble PM Narendra Modi lays high emphasis on providing strong connectivity, which is essential for building a developed India," said Sarbananda Sonowal, minister of ports, shipping, and waterways. "The installation of these jetties will be a big push for socio-economic development of these regions in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and create new avenues for water-related tourism and regional trade with more employment opportunities for the local population."

The ministry has given in-principle approval to 4 more projects under the Sagarmala programme, bringing the total number of floating jetty projects in Karnataka to 11. These projects, which will be used for tourism, are mostly situated on the Gurupura and Netravati rivers. bridge.

A statement issued by the ministry on Thursday lists the additional sites as Thannir Bhavi Church, Bangra Kuluru, Kulur Bridge, and Jappina Mogaru NH bridge.

In addition, four floating jetty projects in Tamil Nadu have received preliminary approval from the government. The Agni Thertham and Villoondi Theertham projects are situated near Rameshwaram, a revered spiritual destination in India.
The projects in Cuddalore and Kanyakumari serve travellers visiting these prestigious tourist locations.

According to the statement, these improvements will help provide tourists with safer, hassle-free transportation and will promote the general growth and improvement of the coastal town. The ministry has promoted a number of reforms and initiatives in the maritime sector as part of its Sagarmala Programme to improve the socio-economic and legal climate of the nation.

One of the ministry's main projects is to advance and create an ecosystem of floating jetties, which, when compared to fixed jetties, offers a lot of benefits such being more environmentally friendly, lasting longer, and having a modular design.
