Karnataka CM Bommai begins preparation for his maiden budget

BENGALURU: After assuming the coveted post, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has begun preparing for his maiden budget. As part of the preparations, the CM has scheduled pre-budget meetings for each department beginning next week.

Bommai is confronted with the challenge of reviving the state's economy and livelihood opportunities, which have deteriorated significantly as a result of the second and third waves of the Covid pandemic. With the Assembly elections scheduled for 2023, CM Bommai will be required to present a budget that is both popular and pro-reform.

Bommai is well-known for his financial acumen. Former Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa had appointed him to the GST council as the government's representative. However, at a time when the government's revenue has decreased, Bommai is compelled to announce popular projects.

Prior to the state Assembly elections, the crucial Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections will be held, and Bommai will have to win them to demonstrate his abilities at a time when the BJP high command has declared that the next elections will be fought under CM Bommai's leadership, putting an end to speculations in the state.According to sources, the government's revenue streams have dwindled significantly.

The state is currently experiencing the third wave of Covid. CM Bommai is expected to discuss the extent to which he can announce popular programmes and budget constraints with officers during pre-budget meetings.
