BANGALORE: The Karnataka Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, approved three significant resolutions during their Monday night meeting. The resolutions include opposition to the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), 'One Nation, One Election', and the delimitation of constituencies for the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
These resolutions are expected to be presented during the ongoing legislative session, likely on Tuesday, according to official sources. In addition to these, the Cabinet has also approved the 'Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024'.
Earlier this month, a four-member committee led by former chief secretary B S Patil submitted a report on restructuring the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike to the government. The draft bill suggests creating a Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) with planning and financial powers to manage the city. It also proposes multiple corporations and up to 400 wards.
In the midst of the ongoing debate over NEET, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar recently called on the Centre to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test and allow states to conduct their own entrance exams.
The High-level Committee on Simultaneous Elections, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, had submitted its report on 'One Nation, One Election' to President Droupadi Murmu in March. Union Home Minister Amit Shah mentioned that the census and delimitation processes would commence soon after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
