Karnataka govt mulls bringing back stringent law on cow slaughter

Karnataka BJP legislators have demanded that the state government brings back the anti-cow slaughter law that was championed by BS Yediyurappa in 2010. The debate of ban on cow slaughter is back once again in Karnataka as the issue was raked up during the BJP's core committee meeting in Mangaluru.

Among many other issues that were discussed, the leadership has decided that they will promulgate a stronger law against cow slaughter in the state than the one that was introduced back in 2008 when BJP was in power.

Speaking after the meet the BJPs state general secretary Aravind Limbavali had this to say "A law against cow slaughter was introduced by the BJP government in 2008, but it was withdrawn by the Siddaramaiah government. So we wanted to bring this law back, at the core committee meeting we had a discussion to revisit the law and make it more stringent.

Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar also said: "it's absolutely essential for us to ban cow slaughter, this is country where the cow is not just considered a holy animal but we also pray to the cow that is considered a part of the family, so we cannot allow cow slaughter in this country, it's against the Hindu philosophy. It's against the basic fabric of the country.

When we asked him whether a ban on beef is on the cards, he mentioned that the ban on cow slaughter would be the first step towards the move “I think we need to have a thorough discussion on the cabinet-level, the cow slaughter should be the first step towards a beef ban," the Minister said.
