Bangalore: The High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of 38 monkeys in Hassan district of Karnataka. About 38 dead monkeys were found in Chaudanhalli village under Belur taluk of Hassan district in the early hours of Thursday. The monkeys were reportedly packed in bags and thrown on the roadside near Chaudanahalli. Before they were poisoned. They were later locked in sacks and beaten. About 20 monkeys were found alive when the sack opened. The matter will be heard on August 4.

The high court on Friday initiated action on a PIL in the case. The court made the district administration, forest department, and animal welfare board respondents in the case. A bench of Chief Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka and Justice N S Sanjay Gowda took suo motu cognizance of the matter as "disturbing" and ordered the Registrar General to file a PIL. The high court in its order said, "Under the law laid down by the Supreme Court, the court must take cognition of the issue.

Locals in Chattanahalli village of Belur taluk found monkeys in sacks. It was then immediately reported to the police. According to the information, they were poisoned and beaten. However, 20 animals were alive. They were immediately watered by the villagers. After that, they left. Some villagers say the monkeys must have been attacked by filling them in sacks. He explained that some of the monkeys who were alive when the sack was opened were gasping badly and unable to move.
