Bangalore: The Karnataka State Assembly recently amended the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022, requiring that 60 percent of the names displayed on boards of government-approved establishments be in Kannada.
This amendment to the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022 extends to various establishments, including commercial, industrial, and business entities, as well as trusts, counseling centers, hospitals, laboratories, amusement centers, and hotels. All such establishments, operating with government or local authority approval, are now mandated to display 60 percent of their name in Kannada on their name boards.
Additionally, the amendment specifies that Kannada must be prominently featured at the top of the name board. This measure aims to encourage the use of the local language in both public and private sectors.
The Karnataka State Assembly stated, "It is deemed necessary to amend the Kannada Language Comprehensive Development Act 2022 (Act 13 of 2023) to designate the Director of the Directorate of Kannada and Culture as a member and the Secretary of the Kannada Development Authority as the convener of the State Level Committee. Furthermore, a provision has been made requiring that commercial, industrial, and business entities, trusts, counseling centers, hospitals, laboratories, amusement centers, hotels, etc., operating with government or local authority approval, ensure that 60 percent of their name boards are in the Kannada language, with Kannada displayed in the upper half of the name board. Hence, the Bill."
This legislative change underscores the commitment of the Karnataka State Assembly to promote and preserve the Kannada language across various sectors of society.
