Trains are expected to run from Kashmir to Kanyakumari from December 2021. The construction of the Katra-Banihal section of the Jammu-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line will be completed by December 2021. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also told in a virtual round table conference that the project to connect Himachal Pradesh to Leh via railway track will also be started soon.

Baramulla Rail Project is one of the most important railway projects in the country. Former Prime Minister Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee laid the foundation of this project in 2003 and gave it the status of a national project. This project was to be completed in the year 2007, but its work is still going on. However, with the completion of the construction work of Jammu-Udhampur-Katra and Banihal-Srinagar-Baramulla section, the railway operations were also restored. Currently, the construction of Banihal section from Katra is still pending. On completion, direct rail service to Srinagar will be restored.

The Railway Minister said that "Work is going on the Katra-Banihal railway section. This region has the highest railway bridge in the world. There are many reasons for the delay in work. Earlier there was no cooperation even at the local level, there were administrative problems. Since September 2018, work is going on very fast. Work has been affected this year due to the lockdown, but it is resumed. The workers and engineers are being called back to work. The project is to be completed by December 2021. with this direct rail connectivity to the valley will be restored."
