On Thursday evening at least 10 policemen were feared trapped inside their post after an avalanche struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The avalanche hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side on Thursday evening. A rescue operation has been launched.
As per an official source report, 10 other policemen posted at the post near the tunnel were reported to be safe. He added "Police rescue teams and other concerned agencies have been rushed to the site,". Heavy snowfall occurred in the Jawahar Tunnel area of the Srinagar-Jammu highway today that just blocked the north portal of the tunnel.

Earlier today, 78 families were shifted to safer places by the police and civil administration from avalanche prone areas of Kulgam district. Earlier in February 2005, a massive avalanche had devastated the lives of dozens of families in Waltangoo Nar area. It is to be noted that Kashmir Valley has been witnessing heavy snowfall since Wednesday and south Kashmir’s Kulgam district has received maximum precipitation in the previous 24 hours. According to officials, some places in the Kulgam district have received as much as five feet snow. And the Snow and Avalanche Studies Establishment has issued high-danger avalanche warning to Anantnag, Budgam, Ganderbal, Kulgam, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara districts in the Valley. Medium-danger warning was issued for Rajouri, Ramban, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, and Leh districts.
