Alpine skier Arif Khan from Jammu and Kashmir has qualified for the Winter Olympic Games in another event. He has become the first Indian athlete to qualify for two different events of the Winter Olympics to be held in Beijing in the coming year.
The Winter Olympic Games are scheduled to be held from February 4 to 20 in Beijing, China. Arif, from Hajibal Tanmarg area of Kashmir, has got his first ticket for these games at the qualifying event held in Dubai a month ago. A month after booking his first Winter Olympic ticket in the alpine skiing slalom category at the Olympic Qualifiers in Dubai, Khan has now achieved the rare feat by qualifying for another event - the giant slalom.
Arif has represented India at the World Championships four times. Khan is a professional alpine skier from Tangmarg in North Kashmir and recently qualified for the giant slalom event in Kolasin, Montenegro. He has represented India in over 100 ski events held around the world and has spent most of this year training in Europe. Notably, only two athletes – Jagdish Singh (cross country skiing) and Shiv Keshavan (luge) had represented India in the 2018 Winter Games, but this year only Arif has qualified for the 2022 Winter Games.
