Health Minister Satyendar Jain said on Monday that the Delhi government is keeping a close check on the COVID-19 situation and that there is no need to be concerned till a new variant of concern is detected.

In an interview with reporters, the minister sought to alleviate concerns about the continuous rise in daily cases in Delhi, as well as the positive rate exceeding 1% in recent days.

"The daily case count in Delhi is estimated to be in the range of 100-200. We're keeping an eye on hospital admissions, which are decreasing. Currently, the focus should not be on the positive rate "Jain explained.

According to data given by the local health authority on Sunday, there were 141 new Covid cases and one more death, with a positive rate of 1.29 percent. The minister's comments come amid a fresh coronavirus variant worry. "Every day a new variant is formed as the virus mutates," Jain said.

The genomic study of the COVID-19 XE variant sample from Gujarat is still ongoing, with results expected soon, according to sources in the Union health ministry. The WHO has issued a warning about XE, a new strain of Omicron that was originally discovered in the United Kingdom, and has warned that it may be more transmissible than any COVID-19 strain previously identified. The XE variant is a mixture or recombinant of Omicron's BA.1 and BA.2 sub-variants.
