Kenyans who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 have heeded a call to take up booster doses as the Omicron variant spreads in the country.

The east African nation started to administer the booster doses on Jan. 1 and as of Monday, some 18,000 citizens had taken up the third dose, Mutahi Kagwe, the cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Health, said in a statement Tuesday. In administering the booster doses, Kenya is targeting those aged above 55 years, frontline health workers, teachers and security officers.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Health Tuesday, 2,402 people have tested positive for the disease from a sample size of 10,638 tested in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate is at 22.6 percent. Total confirmed positive cases are 302,134 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 3,056,954.

As of Monday, a total of 10,220,981 vaccines had been administered across the country. Of these, 5,910,320 are partially vaccinated while those fully vaccinated are 4,270,594, the ministry said.
