THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is preparing to observe Software Freedom Day on September 25 by holding concurrent technical classes based on FOSS (Free Software) in each of the state's 14 districts.
The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) of the General Education Department and Democratic Alliance for Knowledge Freedom will collaborate on the programme (DAKF).
During the covid pandemic time, KITE-Victers channel served as the backbone by managing offline and online classroom sessions for two years, greatly assisting state-run schools.
On September 25, each of the 14 districts would cater to a different FOSS theme for the class, said K.Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE. "All 14 of KITE's district offices would provide FOSS-based training sessions on that day. The fact that each of KITE's 14 district offices will offer various training programme themes will be an exceptional accomplishment "Sadath said.
The various themes include Kasaragod (Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia), Kannur (Scribus- DTP), Wayanad (OpenStreetMap), Kozhikode (ExpEyes- Open hardware), Malappuram (GNUKhata- Accounting), Palakkad (GeoGebra and Maths), Thrissur (Kdenlive- Video editing), Ernakulam (Scratch- Visual programming), Idukki (Opentoon (Krita -Graphics).
"Starting today, anyone who wants to take part in the training programmes offered by KITE's district offices can register for free at akite.kerala.gv.in/SFDay2022. The platform, which was launched by Education Minister V. Sivankutty at KITE Victers studio on Wednesday, allows the public to access all 14 classes "Sadath added.
On that day, there will be public awareness campaigns about free software in every KITE district office. Install Fests would also be held as part of this, when the public could freely download and install the most recent KITE GNU Linux 20.04 version.
There will be specific Free Software-based training programmes that will be televised on the KITE Victers channel from September 22 to 24 as a lead-up to the Software Freedom Day celebrations.
