THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala's ruling CPI(M) accused the state's governor, Arif Mohammed Khan, on Tuesday of orchestrating a constitutional crisis at the direction of the BJP and RSS.
M B Rajesh, the minister for local self-government, and Thomas Isaac, the state's former finance minister, said Khan was attempting to enact BJP-RSS ideas in Kerala, and that this was obvious from his recent actions.
According to Rajesh and Isaac, who made similar claims, "whenever there is a non-BJP government, they are using the Governor to cause issues in those states." Rajesh claimed that the BJP knows it cannot scare or purchase Left MLAs into joining it, as it did in other states like Karnataka and Goa. Look at Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Jharkhand; it's happening there as well, not just in Kerala, they said. They added that the Governor's refusal to sign the Lok Ayukta Amendment and University Laws Bills after seeing them indicates that he has preconceived notions about them.
The Governor's actions, "show who he is working for and where the remote control is," adding that "the RSS is using the Governor to create this constitutional issue," Rajesh said.
Isaac advised the governor to be aware of his responsibilities. He is required to follow the cabinet's recommendations. However, he is behaving like the King of Kerala. That can't be allowed. Political opposition is the only way to solve the issue, he said. Isaac said, "Who is he to declare that he won't sign the legislation enacted by an elected government and will put it in his pocket?"
The two CPI(M) leaders' responses come a day after Khan conducted a historic press conference at the Raj Bhavan to disclose videos of alleged heckling directed at him at Kannur University in 2019 as well as letters the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote him regarding intervention in university affairs.
Khan had also charged the state administration and the chief minister with using "pressure tactics" against the Raj Bhavan and using physical force to quash dissenting voices during the news conference. He has said that he opposed the bills to amend the Lok Ayukta and University Laws.
