Kochi: Within 12 hours in the district of Kerala, the political wing of the radical Islamic organization PFI SDPI and two BJP leaders were killed. Section 144 has been imposed amid tension across the district following the killings. First on Saturday evening SDPI leader KS Shan was killed on the road. Shan, 38, was on his way home when a car hit his bike on the way. Then four people got out of the same car, attacked Shan with a knife, and fled in the same car. Shan later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The next morning, some people entered the house of Ranjit Srinivasan, secretary of the BJP's OBC Front in the state, and killed him in front of his mother, his wife, and his daughter.

The police are investigating both the murders, but have not released more information yet. Around 50 people have been taken into custody, most of whom are workers of BJP, RSS, and SDPI. Section 144 is in force in the Alpurra district at this time. Kerala BJP unit president K Surendran has directly accused the Popular Front of India (PFI) of killing Srinivasan. SDPI is a political organization of PFI itself. Along with this, Surendran has denied the role of RSS and BJP behind Shan's murder. SDPI national president MK Faizi has blamed Shaan's murder on the RSS.

Kerala has a long history of such political killings. According to a report, there have been 125 political killings in the state in the last 15 years, killing equal numbers of RSS and CPM activists. Till date, these killings have not been institutionally investigated and no accused has been punished. After the establishment of the SDPI in 2009, the party's workers also began to be exposed to violence. Later, they were also accused of involvement in the violence. In 2014, the Kerala government had told the Kerala High Court in an affidavit that activists of PFI and another organization related to it, NDF, were found involved in 27 murders, 86 attempt to murder cases and 106 other cases of communal violence.
