Kerala: 8 died as car falls into a gorge while returning from Sabarimala

Kochi: Eight pilgrims returning from the Sabarimala temple in Kerala died on Friday after their car fell into a 40-feet deep pit at Kumili Mountain Pass in Theni district, police said. All the existing passengers in the vehicle were residents of Theni-Endipetty in Tamil Nadu. District Collector KV Muralidharan said that around 10 people were returning from Sabarimala temple in a car when the driver lost control of the vehicle. After hitting the mountain, the car fell into a 40-foot-deep ditch, in which 7 people died on the spot.

According to media reports, police officials from Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been plowed into service to rescue the devotees. Seven of the 10 passengers in the vehicle died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital, police said. The other two injured have been admitted to the hospital for treatment. A 3-year-old child is among the injured. Ten Ayyappa devotees hailing from Samugasundarapuram village near Andipatti were on their way home after visiting Sabarimala when their car met with an accident late on Friday night, police said.

The police have registered a case in connection with the accident. According to a preliminary investigation, police suspect that heavy smog could have been the cause of the accident. According to the report, the two rescued include a 9-year-old child. They sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby government hospital, where they were given first aid.
