Kochi: Kerala Congress unit president Mullappally Ramachandran has made a shameful remark about the rape victim. Speaking at a protest meeting held during the UDF's 'Betrayal Day', Mullapally said that if a rape victim has any self-respect, she would commit suicide.
According to media reports, Kerala Congress unit state president Mullappally Ramachandran referred to the accused in the solar case, saying that CM Pinarayi Vijayan cannot escape by bringing in a sex worker. Mullappally further said that, "it's a desperate attempt by the (Left) to dress up a prostitute and make her stand behind the curtain and narrate her tales. This will not work. One can understand when a woman is raped once. But what if she repeatedly says it. A woman with self-respect will either die by suicide after she is raped or try not to be sexually assaulted again."
After making anti-women statements, Mullappally noticed that the people present in the secretariat turned against the statements made by him. Seeing himself surrounded in controversies, Ramachandran immediately apologized to the crowd, reversing his statements. Mullapally said, "My outrage was against the LDF government and it was not my motive to hurt the sentiments of women." I sincerely apologize for my controversial comments. "
