Kerala Doctor Murder: Congress Women Workers Hold 12-Hour Hunger Strike

Thiruvananthapuram: The murder of Dr. Vandana Das while she was on duty at Kottarakkara Taluk hospital is the subject of a 12-hour protest by female Congress party workers on Tuesday.

The accused, S Sandeep (42), fatally stabbed the hospital's house surgeon on Tuesday, killing Dr. Vandana (23). 

Jeby Methar, president of Congress Mahila Morcha, "Congress Mahila said, Morcha is observing a 12-hour protest" hunger protest from 6 am to 6 pm against the killing of Dr. Vandana and demands to protect the lives of medical professionals and staff."

The president of Congress Mahila Morcha expressed her support for the demands of the medical community and said, "We stand with health workers and doctors and with their demand to bring an ordinance and install cameras in the hospital."
"Congress Mahila Morcha stands with physicians and healthcare professionals who are staging a sit-in in front of the Kerala secretariat to demand that doctors have safety and security at work as well as justice for Dr. Vandana. Doctors, particularly the young doctor, are in a condition of panic following the murder of Dr. Vandana, he said. Outside the secretariat, the Congress Mahila Morcha is holding a demonstration.

Following the murder of a doctor earlier this week, a group of doctors led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) met with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan earlier that day and made a number of concerns regarding the protection of medical professionals.

A new ordinance to safeguard state health workers has been demanded, said IMA state president Dr. Sulphi Noohu. MOreover, the accused broke inside the hospital and vandalised it. Also hurt by stabs were a home guard and a sub-inspector.

Dr. Vandana was taken to KIMS hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where she later passed away from her wounds, according to the police. On Wednesday, the home surgeon Dr. Vandana Das murder suspect G Sandeep was given a 14-day remand by Kerala's Kottarakkara magistrate court.
