Kochi: The decision on the bail of former Kerala CM M M Shivshankar, arrested in the gold smuggling case, has been postponed till tomorrow. During the hearing in the court, it was told by the Customs Department that the main accused in the case, Swapna Suresh and Shivshankar, have travelled abroad many times together, behind which a conspiracy appears.
The Customs Department told the court that former chief secretary of CM M Shivshankar had visited abroad seven times along with Swapna Suresh, the main accused in the case. The court was also told by the Customs Department that Shivshankar had accepted that he had to bear the expenses of foreign trips made with Swapna Suresh. The Customs Department is looking at the foreign tours of Swapna Suresh and M Shivshankar with the conspiracy. During the bail hearing, the Customs Department, in its plea, also stated that why would a senior IAS officer do this?
Whereas, on behalf of M Shivshankar, it was said in the court that no evidence related to the case registered by the Customs Department is against him. Shivshankar also told that he has been ill since 2015. On this, the Customs Department retorted and said whether the disease prevents foreign visits. After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the court has deferred the decision on bail till tomorrow.
