Kerala Government issues ordinance for cutting salary of its staff to fight with corona crisis

The Kerala government has decided to bring an ordinance on Wednesday to cut the salaries of employees to overcome the shortage of money to deal with the Corona crisis. It is to be known that the Kerala High Court on Tuesday had stayed the order of the salary cut issued by the state government for the next two months. The High Court did not declare this order as law. This decision has been taken by the Left-led government of Kerala, a day after the high court's stated stand.

The Kerala government had ordered a cut in the salary of government employees in the campaign to fight Coron. It was said in this order that for the next five months, six days' salary of the state government employees will be deducted every month. Employee organizations moved the court to protest against this decree. The government has changed its strategy after an immediate stay on the order from the High Court. State Finance Minister TM Thomas Isaac told about the decision of the cabinet that under the ordinance, the state government will deduct 25 percent salary of employees.

Regarding the matter, Thomas Issac said that according to the ordinance, in the event of disaster, the state government will have the right to deduct 25 percent of the salary of government employees. He also said that the state government can also take a decision on returning the withheld salary within six months. Two important provisions have been made in the ordinance. The minister also clarified that under the provision, 25 percent salary will not be stopped and the government will deduct six days salary as per the earlier order. He told that since the court had said that the state has no legal basis for deducting salary, we have decided to enact a law in this regard.
