Thiruvananthapuram:  the Kerala Government Medical Officers Association (KGMOA) and the Kerala unit of the Indian Medical Association on Thursday told the state government that there should be a change in strategy to tackle the surging Covid-19 cases.

Doctors in govt and private hospitals demanded the state government to impose strict crowd-controlling measures considering the surge in the number of Covid-19 patients in Kerala. According to the state chapter of the Indian Medical Association, micro containment and curfew should be imposed for the next two weeks.

The state president of IMA, Dr PT Zacharias said, Break the chain campaign should be strictly implemented as the disease could spread from one person to 10 or 15 others, He said, the coming two weeks are going to be very crucial and it's very essential to come up with curfews and micro containment zones.

On Wednesday when 1,21,763 people were tested, 22,414 tested positive, the highest daily number of positive cases in the state. This took the number of active cases to an all-time high of over 1.35 lakh.

The IMA also asked for the speedy conduct of the examinations for the medical professionals as replacements for outgoing house surgeons have to take place.

The KGMOA -- the body of the medical doctors working under the Department of Health Services in the state -- in its letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan while welcoming the increase in the daily testing, however, cautioned that if there is going to be a delay in getting the test results, this mass testing exercise could turn counterproductive.
