Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's CPI-M Left Democratic Government on Monday suspended the controversial amendment to the state police law after criticism from various sections. CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that his government's intention is not yet to implement this amended law, as LDF supporters and those standing for the protection of democracy have raised concerns about it.

CM Vijayan said in a statement, 'We do not intend to implement the revised Kerala Police Act yet. A detailed discussion in this regard will be held in the Legislative Assembly and further decision will be taken after hearing the opinion of various sections. 'Opposition parties had criticized the amendment brought through the ordinance and said that it is against freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

The Kerala cabinet last month decided to add section 118-A to the police act to make it more effective. Under this, if a person produces, publishes or broadcasts any material which defames or insults a person through social media, then he can be fined Rs 10,000 or imprisoned for five years or both.
