Why pension to Madarsa teachers? Kerala govt questions HIGH Court

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has questioned the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Left government as to why it is financing a religious activity while giving pension to madarsa teachers. The high court asked the question while hearing a petition against the government's earlier decision to provide pension to madarsa teachers in the state on Tuesday (June 1). At the same time, the court has asked the state to clarify whether it has made any contribution to the Kerala Madarsa Teachers Welfare Fund or not.

A bench of High Court Justice A Mohammad Mushtaq and Justice Kausar Edappagath issued the order on a petition filed by Manoj, Secretary, Civil Organisation for Democracy, Equality, Justice and Secularism. It seeks repeal of the Kerala Madarsa Teachers Welfare Fund Act, 2019. The State Government had passed the Act to provide other benefits including pension to madarsa teachers.

The petitioner's counsel C Rajendran told the high court that after reading the Act, it has become clear that these madarsas impart only textbooks related to Quran and Islam. In such a situation, large amounts of funding is totally unconstitutional and against the principles of secularism enshrined in the Constitution.
