The BJP is moving the Kerala High Court against the amendment to Kerala Police Act. BJP state president K Surendran will file a petition in the high court.

The BJP will point out in the petition that the amendment made to the act is an infringement of the citizen's rights. Section 118 (A) of the Kerala Police Act was amended in order to stop cyberattacks and defamation of individuals through social media.  However, allegations arose from many corners pointing out that the amendment will adversely affect freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. In this context, the BJP decided to approach the high court with the petition.

Congress has also opposed the amendments in the police act Meanwhile, the government is also considering to change the controversial provisions in the amended act. Stiff opposition was registered by CPM and the police department against the amended law.

Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on Saturday signed the Kerala Police Act Amendment ordinance brought by the Left front government envisaging the addition of Section 118-A to prevent cyber attacks against women and children. The section stipulates either imprisonment for up to five years or a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or both to those who produce, publish or disseminate content through any means of communication with an intention to intimidate, insult or defame any person through social media.
