A 46-year-old self-taught engineer from Muhamma from Kerala has come out with a fantastic contribution of his own to carry on with life in Covid times. The electronic voting machine (EVM) by Rishikesh can help voters cast the ballot with the help of a mobile phone. The Kerala State Election Commission, reviewed how the device works after Rishikesh gave a live demo, expressed satisfaction and has asked him to approach the Election Commission of India.
The designer informs the new device can be of help greatly during elections, especially those held in crisis like the coronavirus pandemic. “Normal EVMs are compatible with this device. The EVM can be linked with a mobile phone and the settings inside polling stations configured with it. It will be controlled by the presiding officer. The voter needs to register a mobile number with the Election Commission and that can be used to cast the vote."
The voter has to make a call and the presiding officer will verify the number. The officer switches allow button and asks voter to cast his/her vote. Upon pressing the mobile keypad, the ballot is cast.
There is no chance of any malpractice. As voters will cast after Presiding officer approval, beep sound after the casting, call list of voters post ballot ensures no malpractice. It will be more helpful for Those based abroad or in other states can exercise their franchise through the registered phone number. The device currently enables only single digit users. PM Modi has said this invention has inspired him in his Mann Ki Baat. Rishikesh is a pre-degree dropout has invented several electronic gadgets and won accolades including one from former President, the late Pranab Mukherjee.
