Kochi: A 19-year-old sailor, Security Guard was found dead with bullet wounds in the early hours of Tuesday, July 6, at the Naval Base in Kochi, Kerala. The guard is believed to have died by suicide. An inquiry was also ordered by the Navy into the incident, by the Ernakulam Harbor Police.
As per the report, the sailor, bachelor and hailing from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was on duty at one of the security check posts inside the base. He was found dead by colleagues around 4 am, said a source. He had access to a weapon at the time. The body has been kept at the Naval base hospital, where it will be subject to post-mortem before being flown home.
The statement in connection with the report reads: “Thushar Atri has been in service for about a year now. On Monday, he was posted for duty at one of the parameter posts of the Naval base. At about 2.30 am in the morning, a routine inspection team found Atri lying on the floor. He was immediately shifted to the hospital, but declared dead,” an officer, familiar with the incident, said.
Both the Navy and the police have begun their probe and the preliminary findings apparently point at suicide.
