Kerala to launch OralScan, handheld device for Oral cancer diagnosis

Cancer predominantly called as life killing disease is still a threat to human even with advanced medical technology and equipment's.Adding a milestone to the technological advancement a joint initiative of startup Sascan Meditech Private Limited and the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), from Keral has given 'Oralscan' a handheld imaging device to diagnose the oral cancer.

Kerala's Health Minister K K Shailaja is formally launching the device today. The expectation to revolutionize the screening, detection and biopsy guidance, an innovation was needed in the oral cancer diagnosis. SCTIMST director Asha Kishore said, “OralScan is a Make-in-India initiative with seed funding from the science and technology department scheme, the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations.”

The CEO of Kerala's startup Sascan, Subhash Narayanan, has said oral cancer is a growing concern in India with a high mortality rate. He added “The current practice relies on oral examinations using torchlight to detect early-stage oral cancer. Studies show this screening technique is not very reliable".
