Seoul: In order to increase the nation's nuclear arsenal, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un called for stepping up the production of weapons-grade nuclear materials, according to state-run media KCNA on Tuesday.

He added that the country should always be fully prepared to use its nuclear arsenal. According to KCNA, Kim made the comments while the nation's nuclear weapons programme was being inspected and trigger technology was being tested.

Two ground-to-ground tactical ballistic missiles were used by the military to simulate a nuclear air explosion strike on Monday, according to a separate dispatch from KCNA. According to KCNA, a defence think tank has also tested strategic underwater weapons systems.

As the US prepared to send an aircraft carrier strike group to nearby waters to intensify military drills with the South, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles Monday towards the waters off its eastern coast, adding to a recent flurry of weapons tests.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said the missiles were launched from a western inland region south of Pyongyang and flew across the country, but they did not immediately provide specific flight information. The coast guard of Japan stated that it thought both weapons had come to rest outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

The launches—the North's seventh missile activity this month—underscore the region's rising military tensions as the pace of both North Korea's weapons tests and US-South Korea military drills has quickened recently in a cycle of tit-for-tat reactions.

Last week, the allies finished an 11-day exercise that featured the most extensive field training in recent memory. But North Korea is expected to further step up its testing activity as the United States moves an aircraft carrier group to the peninsula this week for another round of joint drills.

In an effort to pressure the United States to acknowledge its nuclear status and engage in negotiations, North Korea has launched more than 20 ballistic and cruise missiles over the course of 11 launch occasions this year.
