In February 2023, German singer-songwriter Kim Petras became the first openly transgender woman to get a Grammy. and how the 30-year-old has expressed her feelings about it.

The Swimsuit Edition cover of the well-known American sports magazine "Sports Illustrated," which features transgender pop star Kim Petras as one of its cover models, has generated controversy. Petras made her debut on the famous edition's cover, sharing the cover with celebrities including Brooks Nader, Megan Fox, and Martha Stewart.

When Petras and Sam Smith won the Best Pop Duo Grammy for their popular song Unholy, they created history by becoming the first openly transgender women to do so. According to her, it was a "insane life moment" that was "so unexpected" and "completely incredible." Wendy Carlos, who won three Grammy Awards in 1970, was the first transgender woman to do so. Petras, however, is the first openly transgender woman to receive the award.

Despite the lack of a clear subject, SI Swimsuit Editor-in-Chief MJ Day said the issue represents a vision of a society in which women can live without restrictions and existential terror. Day underlined that despite the cover models' various backgrounds, they had similar characteristics and a constant evolution in their respective journeys.

Petras explained, "No matter what your gender or sexuality or any of that stuff is, it's about what you make of life and it's about what's inside of you and all of that, so I hope that can be inspiring to people." She feels her biggest strength is knowing who she is and her gender identity not defining her. "I want to see more equality where labels, gender, sexuality, and skin color don’t separate people so much, and it's about what you do and what you stand for and what's inside. Being yourself and being unapologetic about it is enough," Petras added.

But Petras' appearance on the magazine's cover has drawn criticism, echoing current debates over the usage of transgender people in advertising campaigns.Despite the criticism that Petras and Bud Light have received, the inclusion of transgender people in popular culture makes a strong message about diversity and challenges cultural conventions.
