New Delhi: Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has made an important statement on the number of pending cases approaching 5 crores. He said if a judge disposes of 50 cases, 100 new cases are registered as people are more aware now and they have started approaching courts to settle disputes.

Kiren Rijiju on Saturday addressed a conference on the functioning of the Armed Forces Tribunal in the presence of Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. During this, he said that the government is using technology to reduce pending cases in courts. Earlier, in response to a question in the monsoon session of Parliament, the Law Minister had said that more than 4.83 crore cases are pending in courts across the country. More than four crore cases are pending in the lower courts and more than 72,000 in the Supreme Court.

He said the proposed law on mediation will help reduce the number of cases in courts by giving a fresh focus on alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. Rijiju said there should be no comparison of pending cases in India and other countries as our problems are different. He said that there are some countries whose population is not even five crores, while the number of pending cases in India is close to five crores. He assured that the Law Ministry will extend all possible assistance to the Armed Forces Tribunal in delivering speedy justice.
