Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders arrested in the Narada sting case in West Bengal are yet to get bail from the Calcutta High Court. The TMC leaders could not get relief at the virtual hearing held on Wednesday (May 19). The next hearing in the case is now scheduled for today.
Earlier on Monday morning (May 17), CBI had taken Ministers Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee, MLA Madan Mitra and former Mayor Shobhan Chatterjee to their office in the Mamata cabinet for questioning. They were later arrested. However, on the same evening, a Special CBI Court headed by Justice Anupam Mukherjee granted bail to the four accused on which the CBI had challenged the CBI court's verdict in the Calcutta High Court. The Calcutta HC had stayed the bail of TMC leaders and decided to send them to custody till May 19. After which TMC leaders were sent to presidency jail.
The accused TMC leaders filed a review petition in the Calcutta High Court which was heard again on Wednesday. Congress leader and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi appeared before the court on behalf of the four leaders of the TMC. Singhvi urged the court to grant interim bail to TMC leaders. Cm Mamata Banerjee had reached the office CBI on the arrest of TMC leaders and sat there for six hours. Questioning this, Executive Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal asked Singhvi how he would justify sitting in the CBI office for 6 hours of CM. On this Singhvi said whatever CM Mamata did was Gandhi's way. Disagreeing, the Chief Justice said that this means that these legal issues can now be resolved on the road.
