WASHINGTON – According to the BBC, the Pentagon has condemned a Kremlin spokeswoman for refusing to rule out the use of nuclear weapons in the Ukraine conflict.
Dmitry Peskov reportedly told International that such weapons may be utilised if Russia faced a "existential threat." Russia possesses the world's greatest nuclear arsenal. Moscow's nuclear remarks, according to Department of Defense spokesman John Kirby, are "hazardous." He told reporters, "It's not the way a responsible nuclear power should act."
Pentagon officials, on the other hand, "haven't seen anything that would cause us to think that we need to adjust our strategic deterrent posture," according to Kirby. "Every day, we monitor this as best we can," he added.
Peskov's remarks were also criticised by former US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. Panetta remarked, "I don't see how you can see it any other way but as worrisome when Russia is seeking for a possible excuse to use low-yield nuclear weapons."
