Uppalapati Krishnam Raju, a veteran actor and former Union Minister passed away on Sunday in the wee hours while he was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, at the age of 83, according to the hospital sources. 

Raju was the uncle of 'Baahubali' star Prabhas.

According to hospital authorities, he had post-Covid-19 illnesses. On August 5, he was admitted to the hospital. In the Atal Bihari Vajpayee administration, he held the position of Union Minister of State and was a two-time member of the Lok Sabha.

Raju, also known as "Rebel Star," played rebellious roles in more than 180 movies and set new standards for the genre. In 1966, he made his cinematic debut in the Telugu film "Chilaka Gorinka." For the different roles he played in movies, he received numerous honours and prizes.

His death was mourned by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao in a statement. KCR stated that the passing of Krishnam Raju, who appeared as a hero in several films over the course of a fifty-year career and garnered fans as a "Rebel Star" with his distinctive acting technique, is a big loss for the Telugu cinema industry. He added that it is regrettable that Krishnam Raju served the country's citizens as a Lok Sabha member, a Union Minister, and in the area of political administration.

In a statement, Telangana BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar expressed his condolences for the loss of the former minister and stated Krishnam Raju's passing would be felt deeply by the party, the Telugu film industry, and the general public.

In a statement, the AIG Hospitals where he was receiving care stated that he was admitted on August 5 for post-Covid problems. He was identified as having severe infective bronchitis and pneumonia brought on by multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi. During his hospital stay, he experienced an irregular heartbeat and decreased kidney function. Since being in, he has been managed with ventilator support. He was receiving the proper care, and close monitoring was carried out.

"He succumbed to severe pneumonia and its complications on 11.9.22 and expired at 3.16 am today due to cardiac arrest," it said.
