Kuwait discovers cholera in a visitor from a nearby country

LONDON: Kuwait discovered cholera in a visitor from a nearby country where the disease is endemic, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Health on Friday.

The World Health Organization reports that Lebanon is currently facing the most severe phase of the outbreak which began in Afghanistan in June and later spread to Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Syria.

According to the Ministry of Health, a citizen has recently returned from a neighboring country where cholera is prevalent and exhibits symptoms of infection.

The ministry said that "the infected citizen was isolated and treated at the ministry's hospital until his recovery."

Additionally, it stated that the Ministry followed necessary procedures while dealing with persons who came in contact with the infected citizen.

The ministry ruled out the possibility of a cholera outbreak in the nation, but urged citizens and residents to take precautions and stay away from contaminated water and food sources when traveling to countries where cholera outbreaks have been reported.

It advised people to go to the nearest health center for necessary guidance and care if they experience suspicious symptoms such as fever and diarrhea within seven days from countries where the disease is common.
